The Parts of a Pipe

Stem
The stem refers to the length of your pipe. Typically, one end has the mouthpiece, and the other connects to the bowl.

Bowl
The bowl is where you pack your combustion material. Don’t pack too tightly, or you will run into airflow issues.

Screen
The screen is a *barely* optional component of a pipe that prevents small bits of debris and ash from travelling up the stem. They are available as metal mesh or glass prongs.

Shotgun/ Carb/ Choke
This hole in the side of some bowls allows you to control the amount of oxygen flowing through your pipe. It can help maintain a burning ember and clear the piece from lingering smoke.

Tapper
Another occasional feature, this most often looks like extra material on the side of a glass bowl. While it is intended to give a more durable surface to “tap” out the spent material, be very cautious in attempting this with your piece.

Lid
Much more common on metal pipes, lids usually screw onto the bowl and make transport much easier. Plus, several of them have a hole in the middle, meaning you can smoke without removing them for ultimate convenience.
